How to evaluate
The criteria that matter (not the ones vendors push)
A buyer’s guide is only useful if it is honest, so here is the frame we would use even if it did not point to us. Judge any nursing simulation platform on four things: does it train the skill you actually need (procedures vs. communication vs. clinical judgment), can your faculty author and edit content, does it assess in a way that maps to your competencies, and what is the real cost per student once implementation is included.
Criterion by criterion
The four questions, unpacked
- Skill match. List the three competencies your accreditation report says need work. If the tool does not directly train those three, its other virtues are irrelevant to you this cycle.
- Faculty authoring. Ask a professor — not the vendor — to build one case during the trial. If it takes a support ticket, content will bottleneck on the vendor forever.
- Assessment mapping. The output that matters is per-competency evidence you can put in front of a committee: rubric scores, transcripts, attempt history. “Time spent” and “completion” are engagement numbers, not competence.
- Real cost. Price the whole first year: licences, onboarding, faculty hours to author, hardware if any. A cheap licence with closed content is usually the expensive option by June.
Run a pilot
One semester, one course, one metric
Do not buy for the institution; pilot for one course. Pick a cohort, define before the semester what better means — rubric scores on two competencies, exam-item performance, student confidence surveys if nothing else exists — and measure the same thing before and after. One honest semester of data beats any vendor comparison chart, and it is exactly the evidence the budget committee will ask for when you propose scaling.
The landscape
Four types of tool, honestly compared
- Procedural / VR sim: best for hands-on skills. Strong for psychomotor competencies, not for conversation.
- Static virtual patients (e.g. Aquifer, Body Interact): solid clinical reasoning cases, but on rails and author-locked.
- Conversational AI (e.g. MetaMedicsVR): best for communication, judgment and soft skills at scale, with faculty authoring.
- Full platforms: combine authoring, simulation and analytics — more to learn, but one system instead of five.
No single tool wins every criterion, and any guide that says otherwise is selling. Match the type to the competency you are trying to move.
